Body Contouring After Massive Weight Loss

By A Aaronson

Blood, sweat, tears, and perhaps some anesthesia, have gotten you to where you are today. The pounds have come off, and you're lighter and healthier than ever. It doesn't matter how you got here, just that you did. Dieting and exercise are the best ways to lose weight, but sometimes it just doesn't come off and you need to get help.

Bariatric weight loss surgery is growing in popularity, which means that the number of people losing extreme amounts of weight is increasing. Interestingly enough, this also means that the number of people seeking plastic surgery is going up too. So, what is the correlation here?

Massive weight loss takes a significant toll on the body. The skin, having been stretched to extremes, has lost elasticity and does not shrink as the fat disappears. You're left with sagging skin draped over your entire body. This skin sadly hides all the hard work you've done to lose the weight, and because there is so much of it, it is hard to see the results of your weight loss.

So now, you've never got to feel the self-confidence you hoped for. You still feel uncomfortable in your own skin - emotionally and literally. Perhaps you even feel mildly depressed and wish you were back to your big self. But there's a way out of your dilemma. To fix this after-effect of massive weight loss, bariatric patients are seeking procedures that, collectively, are known as body contouring.

Body contouring consists of several procedures that eliminate excess skin and tighten sagging skin to reveal the smaller you underneath. Here are the typical procedures that fall under the umbrella of body contouring plastic surgery:

* Body lift: A body lift actually involves the lower portion of the body. It incorporates a tummy tuck, a thigh lift and butt lift in one procedure. These tend to be the most affected areas because they tend to hold more fat than other areas.

* Liposuction: It is possible that liposuction will be necessary in conjunction with the body lift. Stubborn fatty deposits may still be hanging around and will interfere with tightening and smoothing out the abdominal, buttocks and thigh area. You may also require liposuction in other areas as well, to achieve your desired results.

* Brachioplasty: This is an arm lift. You know the bat wings that form as you get older and lose elasticity in the skin. Imagine losing hundreds of pounds and then picture the amount of sagging skin now. The arm lift cuts off the excess skin and pulls it tight. Voila, instant biceps and triceps!

* Breast Lift: This is another area where fat likes to gather, and as it melts away, the breasts start to sag. When you're done, you've got a pair of deflated balloons hanging down to your navel. A breast lift is going to pick them up and put them where they belong.

* Implants: In conjunction with a breast lift, you may need implants to finish off the look. You may have lost so much fat that there's very little breast tissue left. Also, if the skin was stretched too much, just a lift may not give a natural look. Implants will further help lift the breasts and give you back a perky bust line.

If you're thinking of having body contouring procedures because you've finally lost weight, do your homework and get a clear idea of what you want before you visit the doctor. Consult with several if you need to, but make sure the surgeon you hire is a board certified plastic surgeon.

It will take several visits and some time before you see the final results, but be patient. It will all be worth it when you look in the mirror and see the person who's been hiding under all that fat and skin. It won't be easy, but body contouring can give you back your shapely old self.
