Cosmetic Surgery Can Be Physically Healthy

By C. Smithson

Is there more to cosmetic surgery than just a physical appearance benefit? The answer is yes for many cosmetic surgery procedures. For many procedures the patient will benefit not only from a changed physical appearance and the psychological and mental changes that it can bring, but they will gain an actual health improvement benefit. In other words, cosmetic surgery can often be physically healthy! This runs counter intuitive to many common misconceptions, especially considering that surgery of any kind is often regarded as hard on the body and always involves the potential for risk and complications.

For example, topical treatments such as microdermabrasion or laser resurfacing stimulate the skin's own cells causing them to regenerate. The result is that the skin cells tighten resulting in new invigorated skin at a time when one's own body was no longer doing this as it did naturally in youth. Surgical weight loss (commonly known as bariatric or gastric banding or lap-band surgery) can literally save a person's life and bring them back from the brink of an early and untimely death caused by all the complications that morbid obesity can bring such as severe diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Without the option of surgical weight loss many morbidly obese patients would simply perish without an option to change their physical health and in turn have an opportunity at an entirely new life. A recent research study that was presented at the American Society for Plastic Surgeons showed that women who had undergone large volume liposuction ended up with lower blood pressure and had a reduced insulin level (a common risk factor for diabetes). For many women, a breast reduction surgery can mean the difference between spending their later years with crippling back pain and spinal deformities versus having a healthy posture and a life free of chronic back and shoulder pain.

So, cosmetic surgery is not just about superficial beauty and appearance changes. Many cosmetic surgical changes can offer life changing health benefits that can enrich a person's life and opportunities. Surgical procedures always carry some kind of risk factor. It is the job of your physician to sit down with you and explain in clear and understandable terms what the risk versus reward probability is that you can expect from any given procedure. You can then decide if you feel that you have a safe opportunity to gain the benefit you desire from a given cosmetic surgery procedure.

Always consult only a licensed medical doctor or similarly licensed medical care facility before undergoing any medical procedure.
