Liposuction Vs Lipodissolve

By A Aaronson

You've got some excess fat in those hard to lose areas like the abdomen and thighs. No matter how much you diet and exercise, it just won't come off. You've heard of liposuction and you know that it is one of the only ways to spot reduce fat so you start researching it. Along the way, you discover a new method called lipodissolve that promises to do the same thing. Now, you need to know how each procedure works to decide which one is right for you. Here is a breakdown of the procedures, the process and the risks for each:

Liposuction

This procedure has been around for many years and is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery practices performed every year. There are several techniques used, but the basic premise is the use of a cannula, which is a vacuum tube that sucks out the fat after the pockets are broken up.

Pros of this procedure:

* It allows for the targeted removal of fat in those stubborn areas that do not respond to diet and exercise.

* It typically takes one process to complete the removal and see results.

*It offers several techniques to choose from depending on your specific situation- dry, wet, super wet, tumescent, ultrasonic assisted and power assisted methods.

* It can be used to treat many areas of the body- abdominals, hips, thighs, arms, buttocks, flanks and breasts.

* It permanently removes existing fat cells.

* Advancements in technology allow for the use of smaller cannulas which means smaller, less noticeable scars.

Cons of this procedure:

* It can be quite expensive. At the very least, it will cost about $1500. The overall charge is determined by the treatment area, the doctor and type of anesthesia used.

* There are risks such as blood clotting, hematomas, infection, perforation of internal organs, death of skin, nerve damage and even death.

* It is also possible that you will not have a smooth finish. Bumps and dents can occur if the cannulas are too thick. Using smaller ones is an easy fix for your surgeon.

* It is not a permanent weight loss method. Though it does get rid of the existing fat cells, new ones can easily form if diet and exercise are ignored.

* It is an invasive method and there is recovery time involved. Final results may take six months.

Lipodissolve

This method involves a series of injections around the area of localized fat. The chemicals in the injection breakdown the fatty deposits and dissolve them.

Pros of the procedure:

* This is a non-invasive method that requires no recovery time afterward.

* It is used to target reduce fatty deposits and can even be used in sensitive areas around the eyes and face.

* May possibly improve skin elasticity and promote collagen production.

Cons of the procedure:

* Lipodissolve is not an FDA approved procedure. There are virtually no studies on the long term effects of the chemical injection or the overall safety of the practice.

* At this time, it is not known what happens to the dissolved fat and the chemicals. It is believed that it is excreted from the body as a waste. However, if it gets into the blood vessels or liver, it can create problems.

* It requires several treatments to the same area for the desired results to be achieved.

* It may seem less expensive than liposuction, but remember it requires several treatments. So, if you pay $500 per treatment and have to go back six times...you can do the math.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you have a board certified plastic surgeon who is experienced in these practices There are risks to liposuction and there are a lot of unknowns regarding lipodissolve, so you need to do your homework and ask a lot of questions. Go with the procedure that is right for you, the results you want and your lifestyle.
