Mentoplasty Surgery For Double Chin

By Jared Rothe

The balance in facial appearance is greatly dictated by the shape and size of the chin. Understandably, people become problematic when they notice that they already have double chin. Double chin, for many people, is characterized by sagging and flapping chin skin.

Actually, it is caused by stubborn chin deposits called chin fat. Usually, chin fat is difficult to be eliminated, even by thorough exercise. That is why many people turn to medical procedures in resolving double chin conditions. In the past, the medical procedures that are involved in fat elimination or fat reduction are limited in options. Today, there are actually a number of medical procedures on which people can find solution to stubborn fat problems. One of which is the mentoplasty surgery.

Mentoplasty is actually a surgery on chin reduction. It basically promotes the reconstructuring and the reformation of the mentum of the face. Mentum refers to the most anterior region of the jaw or the mandible. For some people, the jaw region is prominent, this is called macrogenia. If the jaw is somewhat deficient or receding, then the condition is called microgenia. With mentoplasty, the mentum region is aesthetically enhanced to make a better profile to the face.

During the mentoplasty surgery, the surgeon usually makes an incision in one or two possible location. He may either do the cut under the lower lip inside the mouth or under the chin in an inconspicuous location or in both. The procedure uses a bone burr or a drill, which is an electrical instrument, to change the shape of the bone in the chin yet still give it a natural appearance. For problematic fat chins, the same procedure is applied. After sucking or melting out the fat, the surgeon will stitch the incision or apply a tape to suit up the incisions.

More and more people are turning to mentoplasty to resolve double chin problems. The procedure can be performed in an outpatient surgical center or hospital. Local anesthesia is use to perform mentoplasty is done, keeping the patient sedated, numbed and awake. For more chin reductions that are more complicated, general anesthesia may be used to put the patient asleep throughout the relatively long surgery. After the procedure, the patient can actually go home to recuperate. However, some patients may be required of an overnight stay for further observations.

Just like in other types of surgery, mentoplasty also involves some health risks. However, complications are near zero among those who have undergone the procedure. What people should look out for is the infection in the chin or the lip area. Swelling is common after mentoplasty. Don't worry, the surgeon will examine the chin and the jaw and evaluate the overall result of the surgery. The doctor's evaluation will vary depending on the age, skin type and the psychological acceptance of the patient to the results of the surgery. Beware if the area suddenly becomes discolored because it might be caused by an infection. Usually, the stitches are removed after seven days. To prevent any trouble, follow the doctor's post-operative instructions and reduce the risks of complications.
