Questions That Must Be Answered Prior to Cosmetic Surgery

By Jonathan Castrie

Appearance enhancing cosmetic surgery is more prevalent than ever. Millions of American men and women have already gone under the knife to enhance their aesthetics. The resulting enhancement of their appearance has inspired new self-confidence. Millions more American men and women are considering one of many types of cosmetic surgery. Before electing to have cosmetic surgery, do your research.

Finding a cosmetic surgeon is easy - just check the phone book or the internet. Scheduling a consultation only requires calling for an appointment and appearing at the surgeon's office. However, before you can proceed with surgery, the doctor will decide if you are a good candidate. Even as you are interviewing surgeons, the surgeons will be interviewing you to determine if you are an ideal patient.

Are you really sure you want cosmetic surgery? Is your body and mind fit for surgery? If you discuss the possibility of a cosmetic procedure in a consultation with a surgeon, the surgeon will factor many things into his decision about performing the surgery. Let us consider a few of those factors.

For what length of time have you contemplated cosmetic surgery? If you have contemplated surgery for some time, you will be a better surgical candidate. Many people decide on a whim to get cosmetic surgery. Inadequate thought about cosmetic surgery is not associated with an ideal candidate. If you have not contemplated cosmetic surgery long enough, as determined by your surgeon, he or she may recommend that you wait a few more months before you make a decision.

Do you know if your expectations for surgery are sensible? Enhancing your appearance will not cure unhappiness. If you believe cosmetic surgery will solve all of your problems, the surgeon will most likely object to operating. In addition, your basic body structure won't change with cosmetic surgery. Surgery will not magically transform you into a new person, it only changes or improves your existing appearance.

What made you decide on cosmetic surgery? Who do you want to make happy - yourself or someone else? You may want cosmetic surgery to please your spouse, but your surgeon won't approve that motive. Don't have cosmetic surgery to please someone else; have it only to please you.

Are you obese? Excess weight can cause a multitude of problems during the healing process. Before agreeing to perform cosmetic surgery, a surgeon may require you to shed some pounds.

Did you know you could be denied cosmetic surgery because of smoking or excessive sun tanning? Smoking hinders after-surgery healing because it restricts the flow of blood. The sun's rays reduce your skin's elasticity and skin stretched during surgery may not return to its original state. If you are a sun god or goddess, or if you smoke excessively, you may fail the surgeons test for an ideal cosmetic patient.

Are you emotionally stable at this time of your life? Two vital elements the body needs to heal after surgery is mental stability and low stress. If your life is too stressful at this time, your surgeon will not want to operate until your life is a bit more calm.

These factors and more will be discussed with each cosmetic surgeon you consult. Not everyone is healthy enough to qualify as an ideal surgical candidate. Ultimately, your surgeon will decide if you are fit enough to undergo cosmetic surgery.
