Weight Loss Surgery - Are You a Candidate?

By James P Wilkinson

There are those of us who try each and every diet but never stick it out and this will be the reason we don't lose the weight we set out to. For the rest, the ones who really try hard through thick and thin but never seem to shift the weight, desperation can settle in.

You should only resort to weight loss surgery if you are one of the latter people - these procedures are designed to help you lose weight quickly and safely but still over a period of 1-2 years and if you are not committed to your new healthy lifestyle you could find the weight taking much longer to shift.

But just how do you know if you are a candidate? Well here's the answer:

For starters you will need to be over the age of 18 as this is a decision that cannot be made by a minor and should only be considered once you have reached the end of puberty.

Weight loss surgery of any kind should only be considered if your Body Mass Index is higher than 30; you should also not have any history of heart problems or be taking any on going medication for any cardiovascular conditions.

If you know of a metabolic or physiological condition which could be responsible for your increased weight then surgery is again not a wise decision and may not yield the results you are expecting.

If you are committed to losing the weight and keeping it off and motivated to undergo the post operation lifestyle changes then this surgery is worth considering.

Like any form of cosmetic surgery, you should think carefully before making a decision about undergoing weight loss surgery. Procedures are now much safer and the techniques used much more advanced so you can feel confident in the results.
