What is a Face Lift?

By Cooper Jones

A face lift is a kind of cosmetic surgery which is done to give the patient a more youthful appearance. Getting a face lift usually involves removing excess facial skin from certain areas on the body, which may or may not involve tightening underlying tissues on the face and even the neck. Currently, face lifts are the seventh most popular cosmetic surgery performed in the United States.

Traditionally, a face lift involves making an incision in front of the ear, which extends up into the hairline. This incision curves slightly around the bottom of the ear and behind, usually ending in the hairline on the neck. Once the incision is made, the skin is separated from other tissues using a scalpel or scissors. If desired, these tissues can then be tightened with sutures, with or without removing any of the excess tissue. After this process is complete, the skin is then re-draped, and any excess skin which is removed is determined by the surgeon. Once the surgeon has made his decision concerning the skin, the excess is removed and the incisions are closed with staples.

The initial incisions which are made to allow access to the skin and tissue below the skin are usually very faint and unnoticeable. There is a small chance of hair loss in the general area of the initial incision, but it is a very rare occurrence. However, in men, a face lift can result in the sideburns being pulled backwards and upwards if the appropriate technique is not used. Because of this, natural looking face lifts are more easily achieved in women than they are men. The only tell-tale sign of a face lift in most people is an earlobe which is out of place, usually pulled a bit forward from the re-draping of the skin.
