Breast Implants - Dealing With People's Reactions

By A Aaronson

If you've undergone breast augmentation or are considering it, you may be worried about people's reactions to your new physique. Not everyone will notice, in fact, in most cases the majority of people are too concerned with their own appearances to pay much attention to yours.

But if you're among those women who've chosen a larger breast implant size, resulting in a dramatic change, you may feel awkward and find yourself having to answer a barrage of questions. You may even have to create a defensive mechanism for gawkers, and acquaintances that can't resist making a snarky comment.

You don't have to let the attention you receive from other people intimidate you. Understanding how to tactfully handle comments and questions about your new look will make the transition easier. The first thing to remember, when addressing social issues concerning your breast augmentation, is that it's your body and your business. Although nobody likes to be judged, it is an inevitable fact of life.

You may come across some individuals who dislike plastic surgery and will publicly express their opinions to you, using your chest as a target. Ignore them. It may feel like a personal attack, but the reality is that you can't control how others view you.

Not everyone will agree with the decisions you make, the way you dress, or how you appear. We all have different aesthetic tastes. If someone, especially a stranger makes a rude judgment based on your breast implants, simply explain to them that his or her comment was inappropriate and remove yourself from the situation.

It is up to you whether or not to you wish to address people's questions. Some women will come to you for advice if they are considering the procedure for themselves. Don't feel obligated to mentor anyone unless you are comfortable doing so.

You can always give them your surgeon's number or a helpful website address and politely explain that you are unable to assist any further.

If someone, such as a coworker, chooses to ask personal questions at work, a simple and effective way is to deflect the question with a quick joke or to honestly express that you do not wish to talk about your personal life at work. By remaining mature and calm, you will most likely succeed in making the offender appear childish and out of line, ensuring they will refrain from repeating such faux-pas in the future.

Use discretion if you prefer to openly answer people's questions about your new breast implants. Some may be appropriate to discuss in a relaxed setting, while others are better left for a private meeting or telephone discussion. It is better to avoid sharing gruesome details, unless the person explicitly states that he or she is interested in the procedure and recovery process.

The most important thing is to try not to concern yourself too much over people's curiosity. The majority of comments and questions will be harmless and not be intended to offend you. If people have a problem with your new appearance, it is their issue, not yours. You cannot control how people react to you. What you can control is how you choose to respond.
